Costa Rica Coffee: Why It's Some of the Best in the World
Share
Costa Rica may be a small country, but it punches far above its weight when it comes to coffee. Known for exceptionally clean, sweet, and complex beans, Costa Rican coffee has earned its place among the most respected origins in specialty coffee.
At Kafista, we source several of our coffees from Costa Rica — and for good reason. Here's what makes this origin so special.
A Culture Built on Quality
Costa Rica was one of the first Central American countries to cultivate coffee, starting in the early 1800s. In 1989, the government went a step further by banning the cultivation of Robusta beans entirely — making Costa Rica one of the only countries in the world that grows exclusively Arabica coffee.
This commitment to quality over quantity has shaped every aspect of the industry, from farming practices to processing methods.
What Makes Costa Rica Coffee Taste So Good?
Costa Rica's geography is ideal for growing exceptional coffee. Volcanic soil rich in minerals, high altitudes (1,200–1,900 meters), and distinct microclimates create the perfect conditions for slow cherry maturation — which develops deeper sweetness and more nuanced flavors.
Typical tasting notes from Costa Rican coffees include honey, citrus, stone fruit, chocolate, and a bright, clean acidity that makes the cup feel vibrant and refreshing.
Key Growing Regions
Tarrazú: The most famous region, known for bright acidity and chocolate sweetness. Elevations of 1,200–1,700m.
Dota (where our ALTURA comes from): Nestled in the mountains south of San José, known for fruit-forward naturals and exceptional microlots at 1,800–1,900m.
West Valley: Known for honey-processed coffees with stone fruit and floral notes.
Central Valley: The birthplace of Costa Rican coffee, producing balanced, approachable cups.
Sustainability Is the Standard
Costa Rica has positioned itself as a leader in sustainable coffee production. Many farms are carbon-neutral or working toward it. Shade-grown practices, water conservation, and fair labor conditions aren't exceptions — they're the norm.
CoopeDota, the cooperative behind our ALTURA, was actually the first carbon-neutral coffee cooperative in the world.
